Freeport is a city in Brazoria County, Texas. As of the 2010 census, Freeport had a population just over 12,000, down slightly from 2000’s total. The city was originally established as a European-American settlement over one hundred years ago by the Freeport Sulphur Company.
Greatly aided by the construction of local Dow Chemical facilities, Freeport’s economy truly began to take off in 1939. Indeed, Freeport remains the home of the company’s largest manufacturing site. Dow Chemical has its Texas Operations facility based in the Port of Freeport.
Educationally, Freeport is home Brazosport High School, Freeport Intermediate School, Lanier Middle School, O.A. Fleming Elementary School, Jane Long Elementary School and Velasco Elementary School. Freeport is included in the 14th congressional district and is currently represented by Republican Randy Weber.
Thirteen years ago, Freeport annexed over three miles of beach near the village of Quintana and the Brazos River. Known as Bryan Beach, this area is close to both Surfside and Quintana beaches.
